    Premiering on Sept. 23.

    Aug. 23, 2022

Tyler Perry has been working on A Jazzman’s Blues for almost 30 years, and now, it’s time to push it out the door and send it out into the world. The film finally hits Netflix this fall, and we’ve got a look at the trailer below.

A Jazzman's Blues Trailer

A Jazzman’s Blues tells a story of forbidden love that unfolds in the Deep South across 50 years, from 1937 to 1987.  A sweet-tempered young musician (Joshua Boone) and a troubled soul with a few secrets (Solea Pfeiffer) have an on-again, off-again romance, woven through a narrative of a family of musicians.

A Jazzman’s Blues may have taken quite a while to escape Perry’s head, but he doesn’t regret the lengthy gestation period. “This is the very first thing that I wrote and I’ve waited a long time to make it,” he told Netflix. “But it is happening at the right time because it was meant for Solea Pfeiffer and Joshua Boone to do and it gave me time to grow as a director.”

Perry is effusive about the work of his cast and crew on the film he dreamt about for so long. “I’m celebrating that all the way around and understanding that Joshua and Solea mirror everybody — the cast and crew — in terms of quality,” he said. “Everybody just brought their A-game.”

Boone and Pfeiffer star in the film alongside Amirah Vann, Austin Scott, Milauna Jemai Jackson, Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Kario Marcel, Lana Young and Ryan Eggold. On the musical side, the film features an original song by Ruth B., choreography by Debbie Allen and a soundtrack of juke joint blues arranged and produced by Academy Award nominee Terence Blanchard (Da 5 Bloods).

The film will have its gala premiere at the 47th annual Toronto International Film Festival, before dropping on Netflix on Sept. 23. If you need your Perry fix before then, we’ve got you covered.
