Bayonet

For a more psychological take on the fight movie genre, this intercontinental boxing drama from director Kyzza Terrazas packs a punch. A co-production between Finland and Mexico, the visually stunning and emotionally charged Bayonet follows a Mexican boxer David “Bayoneta” Jiménez (Luis Gerardo Méndez, who was nominated for an Ariel Award for his performance) who leaves his life at home to retire in Finland. Haunted by the failures of his past, he lives in a self-imposed isolation until a glimmer of hope draws him back into the ring — the only place he can possibly find redemption.

Boxer

A scrappy young fighter chases an impossible dream in this 2024 Polish sports drama, directed by Mitja Okorn. The setting is communist Poland in the 1980s, where Jedrzej (Eryk Kulm), a talented boxer who grew up with the sport, dreams of being the world’s best. After winning a Polish championship, however, he knows he’ll have to leave his home in order to climb any higher, so he and his new wife escape their country to see how far their dreams can take them. It sets Jedrzej on a path that could lead him to achieving his highest ambition or, just as easily, throwing it away.

Bruised

Halle Berry went all in on Bruised, making her directorial debut with the gritty sports film and pulling no punches in the lead role. She stars as Jackie Justice, a former MMA fighter who gets a second chance (or two). After impressing a promoter, Jackie is unexpectedly recruited back into the sport and starts training again; meanwhile, she receives custody of her young son, whom she has not seen in years. In order to take on the dual challenges of fighting and motherhood, Jackie must summon more strength than ever before — and take a few bruises.

Counterpunch

For a hard-hitting nonfiction look at the boxing world, turn to this 2017 documentary from filmmaker and former amateur boxer Jay Bulger. His love for the sport inspired him to reflect upon its current place in the culture: While it still attracts new talents and fans, boxing seems to be at a crossroads, its heyday of popularity behind it. With that in mind, the film follows three amateur boxers (Chris “Lil B Hop” Colbert, Cam F. Awesome, and Peter Quillin) at different points in their careers, all facing different triumphs and challenges, and features some well-known names offering insight and commentary.

Hands of Stone

In his storied three-decade–plus career, Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán earned the nickname “Manos de Piedra” — that’s “Hands of Stone” — for his stunningly powerful punches. Titled after the intimidating moniker, Jonathan Jakubowicz’s 2016 biopic about Durán stars Édgar Ramírez as the renowned fighter, tracing his history from his humble origins to the heights of his success. On the journey alongside him are his wife Felicidad (Ana de Armas) and his coach, the legendary American trainer Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro); facing off against Durán and his hands of stone repeatedly over the years is his famous rival Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher).

K.O.

For some authentic MMA action in a gripping fictional movie, turn to Antoine Blossier’s 2025 action thriller. The French film stars real-life fighter Ciryl Gane as Bastien, an MMA champion in Marseille who leaves the sport after one of his fights results in the death of his opponent. When the teenage son of the dead fighter goes missing, the boy’s mother turns to Bastien to recover him. Teaming up with a determined police chief on a revenge mission of her own, Bastien navigates a dark criminal underworld to find the lost boy and to atone for his mistake.
