Empire State Building Lights up for ’Stranger Things’ Season 4 - Netflix Tudum

Landmarks Around the World Are Headed to the Upside Down

    Something sinister is happening …

    May 26, 2022

Stop the presses: We’re getting word here at Tudum that multiple rifts to the Upside Down are opening up worldwide. From the Empire State Building in New York City to the Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia and the Guggenheim Bilbao in País Vasco, Spain, the sinister alternate dimension seems to be leaking into our world. To make matters worse, a terrifying Demogorgon seems to be about to emerge from the crack in the Empire State Building. No word yet on how this will affect morning traffic.

The news comes more than 30 years after precocious young laboratory test subject Eleven tore open a portal to the Upside Down and unleashed chaos in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. The events that followed have been replicated on-screen in the Netflix series Stranger Things (the fourth season of which, coincidentally enough, premieres May 27). Now, for the first time, the entire world is witnessing these rifts — and monsters — popping up on landmarks around the world. Concerning? A little. Spectacular? Undeniably.

The cast of Stranger Things is unperturbed by the shocking development. From the observation deck of the Empire State Building, star Gaten Matarazzo (who plays Dustin) weighs in on the Demogorgon’s chances. “I mean, it sucks for that thing because it’s gonna jump and then it’s not gonna do well if it just jumps out of the Empire State Building,” Matarazzo tells Tudum. “You might want, like, to be a little more level. I don’t think he can work elevators.”

Cara Buono, who plays Karen Wheeler, takes a less optimistic view of the circumstances. “I think we’re shit out of luck,” she says with a laugh. Still, the event brings to mind her childhood in the Bronx, when she used to ride her bicycle to the only spot in the neighborhood where she could see the tip of the Empire State Building. “It's always just incredible to think that this was built in 13 months,” she says. “And I can't even get the scaffolding off my building that's been up there for three years.”

Scientists are currently predicting the Empire State Building’s rift will reach its zenith around dusk in New York (or 8:45 p.m.). The best viewing location should be at 40.7411 N 73.9894 W (that’s around the Flatiron District, for any New Yorkers not up on their geography). Matarazzo is ready for things to get crazy. “I’ll be in the city somewhere. Running amok,” he says. Hey, it may be the end of the world, but that’s no excuse to pass up some sightseeing opportunities!

For more information about the Upside Down, the entire story of Stranger Things is available only on Netflix, with the new season streaming May 27. Season 4 is taking on a distinctly more horror-inspired flavor; the cast cites Insidious, Poltergeist, and A Nightmare on Elm Street as a few of their favorite genre inspirations. Stay safe out there, and watch out for Demogorgons.
