‘Extraction 2’: Everything You Need to Know

Chris Hemsworth is back in the danger zone as Tyler Rake.

    June 16, 2023

Battling back from the brink of death, Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) must confront his past to take on his most dangerous mission yet in Extraction 2, now streaming on Netflix.

In 2020’s Extraction — based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — Hemsworth’s black-ops gun for hire finds himself on a life-threatening mission in Bangladesh, trying to save the son of an incarcerated Indian drug lord. Now, Hemsworth is reuniting with director Sam Hargrave for another high-stakes rescue escapade this June.  Buckle up, because from the looks of the trailer, it’s going to be a bitter fight. Get ready for even more thrills, higher-stakes action and some answers about Tyler Rake’s mysterious past.

Hargrave started to imagine what sequel to the original film would look like even before it launched on Netflix, after seeing how enthusiastic audiences were in early screenings. “Those early reactions were so positive that they actually changed the ending of the first film,” he told Netflix. “Originally, Joe Russo and I agreed that an arc of redemption felt right for the character of Tyler Rake and having him sacrifice his life at the end of the movie felt like a fitting end. But when the reactions indicated that this character has legs and people might enjoy another round, we went back in and filmed a new ending. Of course, you never really know how a global audience is going to react. So, when the movie dropped in 2020, and the audience responded as positively as they did, we knew we made the right call. The gears started turning about the next story almost immediately.”

When is the release date for Extraction 2?

Extraction 2 begins its assignment on Netflix on June 16 at 12am P.T./3am E.T.

What is Extraction 2 about?

After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Hemsworth is back as Australian black-ops gun for hire Tyler Rake, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they’re being held.

If the first film introduced audiences to Tyler Rake as a seasoned action hero, Hargrave says the sequel aims to show how he got that way, and the toll it has taken on him and those close to him. “The goal was to dive deeper into the backstory of Tyler Rake and find out what makes him tick,” he said. “The first film alludes to a deeply emotional inciting event, a family tragedy, but for the most part he remains a mysterious character. We felt we owed it to the audience to give them more insight into what it is that drives him. So, we introduce some new characters that bring his past into greater focus and learn more about where he’s coming from and why he’s doing what he’s doing.”

Who is in the cast of Extraction 2?

Who is in the cast of Extraction 2?

Hemsworth is joined by Golshifteh Farahani and Adam Bessa, who reprise their roles as Nik Khan and Yaz Khan. Joining them in this new adventure are new cast-members Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili.

“Chris brings so much of himself to this character that without him, Tyler Rake doesn’t exist,” Hargrave told Netflix. “A lot of the details in the storytelling came from him. At the end of the first film, Rake gives his life for this kid. Or at least he thinks he has. But after he gets revived, he goes through an existential crisis. This whole movie is basically answering the question, “Why am I here?” And I think Tyler finds his answer and his peace in knowing that he’s meant to help people — however bloody and difficult it might get in the process.”
