Did you just feel a sudden chill crawl up your spine? Don’t worry, that’s not a ghost haunting your halls — Tim Burton’s Wednesday Addams has simply arrived. In a spooky surprise during Geeked Week’s series showcase, budding scream queen Jenna Ortega makes her debut as Wednesday’s titular character in a video reveal. This is fans’ first taste of the upcoming YA supernatural mystery, which is directed by Burton and claims Smallville co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar as showrunners. “Snap. Snap. Excited to share this first look at Wednesday,” Gough and Millar tell Tudum, previewing the introduction. “Her trademark braids may be the same and her acid-tongued zingers just as morbid, but our Wednesday Addams is all grown up.”

In the new video above, Ortega’s Wednesday dramatically waits to make her entrance. First we see her twisting her signature pigtail braids, black nail polish gleaming. Then she turns, backlit toward the camera, blunt bangs in perfect silhouette. Finally, a somber Wednesday strides into frame to the sound of pounding platforms and a crescendoing soundtrack. Wednesday doesn’t smile as a hello, she fixes the lapels on her gothic maxi dress and glowers. Don’t mess with Wednesday, or her sidekick Thing, who pops up on his mistress’ shoulder.
“Being 16 comes with its own set of challenges that even someone as brilliant as Wednesday finds challenging,” writers Gough and Millar tell Tudum. “Needless to say, Tim Burton and Wednesday Addams proved to be a match made in a deliciously dark corner of heaven. Can’t wait to show you more. As Wednesday would say, this is just the tip of the gravestone.”

Wednesday follows its heroine as she studies at the paranormal Nevermore Academy. Wednesday will have to master her growing psychic abilities at the school, all while trying to thwart a local murderous monster spree and cracking the secrets that entangled her parents 25 years earlier. Oh, and there are the many messy relationships that come with a magical academy of teenagers to handle. Ask Wednesday’s otherworldly predecessors like Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka), Alina (Jessie Mei Li) and Bloom (Abigail Cowen) — such a feat is never easy. But it sure is fun. Catch all the mayhem when Wednesday snaps onto Netflix later this year.
