Two MLB Doc Series About the Boston Red Sox Are on Deck for This Year

It’s (almost) time to play ball.

    Feb. 7, 2024

Ship up to Boston: For the first time, Netflix will follow an MLB team over the course of the 2024 season, documenting the Boston Red Sox as they compete across ups and downs in one of the most rabid sports environments in the league. From the creators of Cheer, Last Chance U, and Wrestlers, the docuseries will debut in 2025 and offer unprecedented access to players, coaches, and executives from one of sports’ most historic teams.

And if you’re a Red Sox fan (or just a baseball fan in general), don’t click away just yet. Also coming this year is the definitive documentary looking back at the greatest comeback in American professional sports: the 2004 Red Sox World Series run. The wildly improbable season ended in the team’s first championship in 86 years — and sparked a chapter of new life for the team. Since then, the Red Sox have gone on to win more World Series in the last 20 years than any club in baseball. The doc series will feature new, exclusive interviews with key players and memorable figures from the team — and take a deep dive into the two-year, high-stakes war on and off the field with the New York Yankees.

The first doc, following the team throughout 2024, will be executive produced and directed by Greg Whiteley of One Potato Productions (Cheer, Last Chance U, Wrestlers). Executive producers also include Andrew Fried and Dane Lillegard of Boardwalk Pictures (Cheer, Chef’s Table, Race: Bubba Wallace).

The doc about the 2004 season will be executive produced by Nick Barnicle, Colin Barnicle, John Skipper, Deirdre Fenton, Howard Bryant, Melody Shaffir, Nick Davis, and Nick Trotta. It’ll be directed by Colin Barnicle and produced by Meadowlark Media.
