Bethany Antonia Solved A Different Netflix Mystery Before ‘Stay Close’

First, she needed to ‘Get Even.’

    Dec. 31, 2021

Bethany Antonia settles effortlessly into the twisty world of British mystery Stay Close as Kayleigh Shaw, the eldest daughter of heroine Megan Pierce (Cush Jumbo). Stay Close could easily belong to Megan alone — the mom of three has a secret past and is seemingly connected to two missing person cases (that sure look like murder cases). But Antonia’s Kayleigh holds her own as an enigmatic teen in the deadly thriller. Early in the series, we learn Kayleigh followed her mom to Vipers, a nightclub central to the disappearances of MIA men Stewart Green and Carlton Flynn. Kayleigh is hiding secrets of her own.

It’s likely Antonia looks so comfortable in the role because it’s not her first time working through a topsy-turvy mystery. Before Antonia stepped foot in Stay Close, she solved a very different series of murders in the juicy Netflix YA thriller Get Even.

Bethany Antonia Solved A Different Netflix Mystery Before ‘Stay Close’

Get Even premiered in February 2020 and follows four high school girls from very different social groups who go by the secret moniker D.G.M., or Don’t Get Mad (... get even. Get it?). D.G.M. is determined on bringing bullies to justice at their posh school, Bannerman. The quartet’s mission becomes dire when one of their fellow classmates — a catfisher and general creep named Ronny (Joe Flynn) — is found dead on the pavement outside of his own home. In the second half of the season, Mika (Emily Carey), another Bannerman student and a previous victim of Ronny’s, is murdered.

Antonia leads Get Even as the bookish Margot, a member of D.G.M. Here, Antonia’s character works tirelessly to uncover the identity of Ronny and Mika’s killer. Not to spoil anything, but her storyline becomes integral to solving the murder mystery — and gives Antonia a lot to do in the vast countryside hills of Bannerman. For anyone who has watched Stay Close’s Kayleigh fight to uncover the skeletons in her mother’s closet, Get Even’s intrigue will feel familiar. So stay close to your screen and, ahem, get even more Bethany Antonia with these back-to-back thrillers.
