It’s almost time to climb aboard with Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates in the upcoming series ONE PIECE. Based on the Japanese manga and long-running anime series, the new live-action adaptation will bring creator Eiichiro Oda’s epic saga to life in a whole new way.

But if this is your first time sailing into the world of ONE PIECE, you might be wondering how to pronounce the fearless protagonist’s name. Thankfully, we have the cast here to help you out.
As star Iñaki Godoy and his castmates explain in the video above, the correct way to pronounce Luffy is “LOO-FEE” — not “LUH-FEE.” Much like the rubber-skinned teenager’s limbs, you’ll want to stretch those vowels out. In the new series, Luffy has high hopes of becoming “King of the Pirates” someday, and his special ability to stretch his body comes in handy when fighting off the dangerous villains and rivals he encounters. With a ragtag pack that he’s assembled, Luffy and his crew set out on a quest to find the mysterious One Piece treasure.
Joining Godoy are Emily Rudd (Nami), Mackenyu Arata (Roronoa Zoro), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp) and Taz Skylar (Sanji). The cast also includes McKinley Belcher III, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Vincent Regan, Jeff Ward, Craig Fairbrass, Langley Kirkwood, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, Chioma Umeala and Steven Ward.
Now that we’ve mastered the art of pronouncing Monkey D. Luffy’s name, it’s time to put on your straw hats because ONE PIECE takes to the seas soon.
