If you’re in need of a mental getaway, look no further than Love in the Villa — an escapist rom-com about a third-grade teacher (Kat Graham) who gets ditched by her no-good boyfriend and jets off to Verona, Italy, to bask in the setting of her favorite Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet. But instead of going it alone, she’s forced to room with a clever British oenophile (Tom Hopper) in a double-booked villa. The two butt heads and chaos ensues — until they get to know each other.

The swoony, goofy and sometimes cynical Love in the Villa is a nice aperitivo for those who like cuddling up to silky-sweet, lighthearted rom-coms like The Christmas PrinceHolidate and The Wrong Missy.

The release date

Love in the Villa is available to stream Sept. 1.

The plot

Julie, who’s in love with the idea of romance, can’t keep her mind off an upcoming trip to Verona, the setting of her favorite play: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, which she even reads to her third graders. But when she tells her boyfriend, Brandon (Raymond Ablack), of their surprise trip, he dumps her on the spot. While recovering from the breakup, Julie heads to Italy solo — that is, until she arrives at her charming villa and meets a wry Brit named Charlie who’s also rented the place and plans to stay.

The setting

Love in the Villa takes place in fair Verona.
