Roald Dahl’s Matilda has been a book, a movie and a musical. Now it’s finally reached its final form — a film adaptation of the novel that’s also an adaptation of the musical. That’s right: Matilda the Musical is coming to Netflix this Christmas, and you can take a look at the trailer right now.

Based on the Olivier and Tony-winning musical, the new film tells the classic tale of Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir), a brilliant young child who goes unappreciated by her crass and uncultured parents. When she finds herself under the thumb of vile headmistress Miss Trunchbull (an almost unrecognizable Emma Thompson), Matilda will need all of her wits and intellect — along with a few other, more supernatural skills. Fortunately, she’ll have the help of the lovely Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), a kind teacher who sees herself in Matilda.

The film is tightly tied to the original West End production; it’s directed by the show’s original director, Matthew Warchus, and features Tim Minchin’s musical numbers, including “Revolting Children,” the earworm you hear in the trailer. (Get it? They’re revolting, but they’re also revolting.) In addition to Weir, Thompson and Lynch, Matilda stars Sindhu Vee as librarian Mrs. Phelps, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Matilda’s hateful parents.

You can catch Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical on Netflix this Christmas. It’s the perfect holiday treat to gobble down alongside, say, a truly massive chocolate cake.
