Unlike Jennifer Coolidge’s beloved Tanya, The White Lotus got a happy ending at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The HBO series from creator Mike White triumphed in the outstanding ensemble in a drama series category over Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark and Severance at the ceremony on Sunday, which was broadcast for the first time on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
Coolidge, who took home an individual award earlier in the evening for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for The White Lotus, was honored alongside castmates F. Murray Abraham, Paolo Camilli, Adam DiMarco, Meghann Fahy, Federico Ferrante, Bruno Gouery, Beatrice Grannò, Jon Gries, Tom Hollander, Sabrina Impacciatore, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, Eleonora Romandini, Federico Scribani, Will Sharpe, Simona Tabasco, Leo Woodall, Francesco Zecca and Aubrey Plaza.
James Marsden and Jenny Slate presented the award to the cast, but it was Abraham alone who delivered a stirring speech onstage, celebrating the international scope of the production.
“This was the best job I ever had,” he said. “Not only because of this really remarkable wonderful family of actors, but because [creator Mike White and executive producers David Bernad and Mark Kamine] pulled together an international company of technicians and actors. We all lived together in the same place. We all ate together and we all worked together, so this is not only for the actors. This is for the entire company. This is a wonderful time."
After sending prayers to the victims of the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey and calling for peace in Ukraine, Abraham ended his remarks by yelling, “Union forever.”
The White Lotus, a social satire which examines power and privilege at a fictional luxury resort chain, moved from Hawaii to Sicily in its second season, taking aim at gender roles and sexuality among a group of European travelers and locals.
With record-breaking ratings and a clean sweep at the Emmys, The White Lotus has already been renewed for a third season, which will be set in a new, presumably murder-haunted vacation destination.
