It’s Close to Midnight and Sing: Thriller Is the Perfect Treat

Buster Moon and the Sing crew have a killer, chiller night in a brand-new animated short film.

    Oct. 16, 2024

Just in time for Halloween, the crew behind animated blockbuster Sing is putting together a spooky new take on Michael Jackson’s classic song “Thriller.” In an animated short film based on Jackson’s own game-changing music video, the animal musicians are tasked with putting on another showstopper. But as the song says, they may have to contend with creatures crawling around the neighborhood — in this case, though, that crawling looks a lot more like dancing. Directed by Garth Jennings (Sing, Sing 2), and produced by Chris Meledandri (Despicable Me and Minions franchise, Sing franchise, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Secret Life of Pets franchise, Lorax, The Grinch), this is one party you won’t want to miss.

“I don’t know if it is possible to enjoy making anything as much as I have done while working on Sing: Thriller,” Jennings tells Tudum. Our awesome cast and team of geniuses at Illumination have gone above and beyond to take one of the biggest hits of all time and concoct a new and very special treat for Halloween."

Read on to learn more, and check out Sing: Thriller when it hits Netflix close to midnight! In the meantime, why not get out the popcorn and rewatch the original Sing, now streaming?

What is Sing: Thriller about?

After staging a spectacular version of “Thriller” at the New Moon Theatre, Buster Moon and the cast of Sing leave to celebrate at Clay Calloway’s Halloween party. But when our heroes arrive, they discover a mysterious, multicolored ooze has transformed Clay and his guests into dancing freaks.

“There are very few songs that have made as tremendous of a cultural impact as ‘Thriller,’” Meledandri says. “With its infectious rhythm, iconic dance moves, and unforgettable beat, it continues to inspire people across generations. Our new short film, featuring the beloved characters from Sing, aims to enchant those who know and love the classic while inviting new audiences to discover it in a fun and exciting way. It’s a timeless celebration of music, creativity, and joy for people all around the world.”
