The Rip Cast Guide: Meet the Tactical Narcotics Team

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, and more star in the new cop thriller.

    Jan. 16, 2026

The cops of The Rip are working overtime — in hostile territory. They’ve “ripped” $20 million dollars in cash, and Miami law says they have to count it before leaving the premises.

Led by Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck), the Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) sets out to get the job done. “They know it’s almost certainly cartel money that belongs to very dangerous people who are probably going to come get it,” Damon tells Netflix. “They’re on the clock, and they have to start thinking of defending where they are because they can’t just leave.”

The Rip’s Ending, Explained: Who Is the Traitor? And What Happens to the Money?

Two men struggle violently in an office, one pinning the other against a desk, while others watch in shock. The setting is a cluttered workspace with glass walls and scattered files, lit by daylight through window blinds.

To make matters worse, the team’s own internal loyalties are fraying. “They have to count the money not knowing necessarily who to trust, including one another,” writer-director Joe Carnahan tells Netflix. As the sun sets, the pile of cash at the center of The Rip starts to exert an unpleasant influence on the TNT. Who can be trusted with that kind of money on the line?

That’s the question facing the cast of characters in the film. Fortunately, once the cameras stopped rolling, things were substantially less tense. “Everybody in this film loved it,” Carnahan says. “The process of making this film and going through that journey with those guys was unforgettable.”

Read on to meet the officers of The Rip. Not all of them will make it through the night.

Matt Damon

as Lieutenant Dane Dumars
About the Character

Dumars is the newly promoted lieutenant of the Tactical Narcotics Team, a grizzled officer who’s navigating a personal loss amid the intensities of his high pressure job.

Like their characters, Damon and Affleck have worked together for years. “[Dumars and Byrne] are old friends,” Damon says. “We’ve worked together for a long time, which means we’ve put our lives in each other’s hands and been under great stress and pressure together. We have this existing friendship and respect and admiration for each other, but as this kicks off, one of us starts behaving oddly, which really seeds a conflict between us.”

Previously In

Damon has been nominated for three Academy Awards for his performances in Good Will Hunting, Invictus, and The Martian. He and Affleck won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.

He’s also starred in the Jason Bourne films, the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, The Departed, Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Saving Private Ryan, The Informant!, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Last Duel, and Air.

Damon and Affleck co-founded Artists Equity, the production company behind The Rip.

Ben Affleck

as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne
About the Character

Byrne is Dumars’s partner, a veteran of the force with his own complicated relationship to their current case.

As their situation escalates, Byrne and Dumars find themselves at odds. “We’ve been peers for our entire careers and now he’s been made the boss of the group,” Affleck says. “It’s a new group cohesion with a new leadership structure. And sometimes when you have people who have worked on a peer basis, it doesn’t always work that well to then have one reporting to the other.”

Previously In

Affleck is a writer, director, and star who’s appeared in films including Gone Girl, Dazed and Confused, Armageddon, Shakespeare in Love, The Last Duel, The Accountant, The Way Back, Pearl Harbor, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

After he and Damon won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, Affleck went on to be a successful filmmaker. His films as a director include Gone Baby Gone, The Town, Live by Night, and Best Picture winner Argo. His next directorial effort, Animals, hits Netflix soon

Steven Yeun

as Detective Mike Ro
About the Character

Ro is another member of the TNT, a dedicated officer who finds himself caught between Dumars and Byrne.

Yeun and Carnahan worked together to build Ro’s character. “In order to break into that unit, the backstory that we gave him was he probably had to be an excellent officer,” Yeun told Netflix. “But then he also sees this squeezed ceiling; the department’s getting gutted, money’s running out. And I think as he’s playing out this role as an officer, he’s also becoming disillusioned.”

Previously In

Yeun was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari and won a Primetime Emmy Award for his turn in Lee Sung Jin’s BEEF. He’s also had roles in Nope, Burning, Okja, The Walking Dead, Sorry to Bother You, Invincible, and The Humans. Yeun will next be seen in Affleck’s upcoming film Animals

Teyana Taylor

as Detective Numa Baptiste
About the Character

Baptiste is another of the officers assigned to Dumars’s team. As the night wears on, she’s placed on counting duty.

By her own admission, Taylor had no trouble playing the role. “She’s definitely the coolest one of the bunch,” she tells Netflix. “She’s cool, she looks good, got a good sense of humor. In this movie, everybody just wants to have a better life. Everybody’s got their own things that they’re dealing with, and we’re all coping with our things differently.”

Previously In

Taylor is a singer and songwriter whose 2025 album Escape Room was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. As an actor, she’s appeared in films including One Battle After Another (for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress), A Thousand and One (for which she won the National Board of Review Award for Breakthrough Performance), Straw, The Book of Clarence, White Men Can’t Jump, Coming 2 America, and Madea’s Big Happy Family.

Catalina Sandino Moreno

as Detective Lolo Salazar
About the Character

Salazar is an officer on the TNT. Along with Baptiste, she counts up the $20 million as the night goes on.

“She’s crazy, she’s adrenaline,” Moreno tells Netflix of her character. “I think when you’re in that environment, you’re not the kind to go home and cook some meals. She’s not like the typical woman that I’ve played, and that’s great.”

Previously In

Moreno was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Maria Full of Grace. She’s also appeared in From, The Bridge, Ballerina, Fast Food Nation, A Most Violent Year, Love in the Time of Cholera, Silent Night, and Che

Sasha Calle

as Desi Lopez Molina
About the Character

Desi is the resident whose home is housing $20 million in cash. But, as the TNT will discover, there’s more to her than meets the eye.

“Desi is a young woman in Hialeah, and she had been taking care of her grandmother up until she passed away,” Calle tells Netflix. “Now she’s stuck in this house cleaning it, fighting her sister for it, and just trying to survive all of these responsibilities.”

Previously In

Calle played an alternate-universe Supergirl in 2023’s The Flash. She also appeared on long-running soap opera The Young and the Restless from 2018 to 2021, a role that nabbed her a nomination for Outstanding Younger Performer in a Drama Series at the Daytime Emmy Awards. She’s also had roles in In the Summer and On Swift Horses, and she’ll appear in the upcoming second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar.

Kyle Chandler

as DEA Agent Matty Nix
About the Character

Nix is a DEA agent and a peer of Dumars and Byrne’s. He warns them against trusting anyone as the department cracks down on corruption.

Chandler has some experience with the kind of personality he plays in The Rip. “I did some firefighting stuff at one time, and so you sort of get along with the police and the sheriffs,” he tells Netflix. “There’s that camaraderie. They’ve got their tribe, and that’s very strong.”

Previously In

Chandler played Coach Taylor on beloved sports series Friday Night Lights, a role that earned him two Emmy nominations and one win. He nabbed two more Emmy nominations for his performance in Bloodline. He’s also appeard in The Wolf of Wall Street, Carol, Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King Kong, Super 8, Game Night, and First Man. He’ll next be seen as beloved Green Lantern Hal Jordan in HBO’s Lanterns

Scott Adkins

as FBI Agent Del Byrne
About the Character

Del Byrne is an FBI agent investigating corruption in Miami-Dade. He’s also J.D.’s brother.

A prolific actor and martial artist, Adkins has been told for years he looks like Affleck. “I did a movie with Sacha Baron Cohen, The Brothers Grimsby, and he was improvising a few things,” he recalls. “He called me Ukrainian Ben Affleck. So I guess I was going to play Ben’s brother at some point, because his real brother evidently wasn’t available for this one.”

Previously In

Adkins has been practicing martial arts since he was 13. It’s a skill set that has landed him in front of the camera for dozens of action films, including John Wick: Chapter 4, The Expendables 2, The Bourne Ultimatum, Doctor Strange, Killer’s Game, Avengement, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Accident Man, and Ninja
