Adam Sandler is looking for work. And that’s just the beginning of his problems.

Now in production in Vancouver, British Columbia, Time Out is the new film from The Pale Blue Eye writer/director Scott Cooper. Golden Globe nominee Sandler (Uncut Gems, Jay Kelly) plays Vincent, a man who has recently been fired and is struggling to conceal the truth about his precarious situation from his family.

Time Out is based on the French film L’Emploi du temps, which holds a special place in Cooper’s heart. “I first encountered Laurent Cantet’s film in 2001, and it’s lived with me ever since,” says Cooper. “I’ve been thinking about revisiting it for years, but now felt like the right moment — we’re living in a time where questions of identity, work, and self-worth have become impossible to ignore.”

The psychological drama brings Sandler’s character to the brink. As the family man spins his quickly growing web of deception to protect his family, he finds himself asking universal questions that transcend his situation. What kind of lies do we tell the people we love? How do we justify them? And what happens, inevitably, when they discover the truth?

Vincent is about to find out. Read on to learn more about Time Out, and meet the rest of Cooper’s killer cast.

What is Time Out about?

Based on the French film L’Emploi du temps by Laurent Cantet and Robin Campillo, when Vincent is fired from his job, he can’t bring himself to tell his wife and family. Rather than reveal the truth, he spins a web of lies to conceal his situation. He escalates his lies further when he creates an investment scheme and asks friends to contribute. His deception threatens to overwhelm his life and his family.

Time Out is written, directed, and produced by Cooper (Hostiles, Crazy Heart) and executive produced by Tracey Landon.

Who is in the cast of Time Out?

The cast of Time Out includes:

  • Adam Sandler (Hustle, Happy Gilmore 2)
  • Willem Dafoe (American Psycho, The Florida Project)
  • Gaby Hoffmann (C’mon C’mon, Deliver Me from Nowhere)
  • F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus, The Grand Budapest Hotel)
  • Steve Zahn (That Thing You Do!, The White Lotus)
  • Adam Horovitz (Golden Exits, Roadside Prophets)

When will Time Out be on Netflix?

There’s no word yet on a release date for Time Out, but stay tuned. The film is now in production in Vancouver. It joins a lineup of other Netflix productions that have filmed in the province, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, Virgin River, The Wrong Paris, and the upcoming film Remarkably Bright Creatures.
