Nonnas Cooked Over Mother’s Day Weekend, Debuting at No. 1

Plus: TV audiences can’t get enough of The Four Seasons and The Eternaut.

This Mother’s Day weekend, Netflix audiences skipped the prix fixe brunch and went straight to the Sunday ragù, making the Vince Vaughn–led Nonnas — a love letter to grief, cooking, and second chances — the most-watched English film of the week with 15.3 million views.

Based on a true story, the film simmers with sauce and sentiment as a mourning son sets out to rebuild his life and community by opening a Staten Island trattoria with a kitchen staffed entirely by grandmother chefs, each with a story — and signature dish — of her own.

The celebrations extended beyond the heartwarming grandmothers of Staten Island. Mothers also kept the cinematic hits coming, with viewing numbers for The Mother and Bird Box increasing more than 20 percent the week of Mother's Day

And TV audiences continued cycling through the seasons with Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen. The Four Seasons maintained its top spot on the English TV list for a second consecutive week, racking up a total of 24.4 million views across its first two weeks (11.9 million in week one, and 12.5 million in week two). There’s something to be said about the appeal of a witty take on middle-aged melancholy. Plus, Forever (3.7 million views) captivated viewers (and wowed critics) with creator Mara Brock Akil’s 2018 Los Angeles–set take on Judy Blume’s classic tale of young love.

Meanwhile, in non-English TVThe Eternaut (Argentina) continued to draw viewers into its post-apocalyptic vision of toxic snowfall and otherworldly adversaries. Its 9.6 million views puts it at more than 20 million just two weeks after its release, and comfortably in the No. 1 spot. Not to mention: It’s a critical darling. And with Season 7 of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror remaining in the Top 10 of the English TV list with 1.7 million views, it’s clear viewers are fixated on (and terrified by the prospects of) near-future dystopias.

Along with post-apocalyptic menace, TV audiences continue to be attracted to (or perhaps lured in by?) the creepy and existentially chilling charms of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley). You Season 5 garnered another 5.5 million views last week, placing it at No. 2 and keeping it in the Top 10 for a third consecutive week. We just can’t get enough of you, You. Plus, Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight (4.3 million views) kept the whole family entertained with its tale of Gaulish villagers outwitting the mighty Roman Empire.

Back to English film, the true crime documentary A Deadly American Marriage compelled audiences with 9.8 million views, while the aptly named HAVOC (9.1 million views) spent another week in the Top 10 at No. 4.

In non-English filmExterritorial followed its exceptional debut week — 38.3 million views — with yet another strong performance. The German action-thriller continued its powerful run, racking up another 23.7 million views and rocketing to No. 8 on the Most Popular Non-English Film list in its second week. The appetite for a gripping global conspiracy is undeniable. Finally, Karol G: Tomorrow Was Beautiful, a documentary that goes behind the scenes of the making of the Colombian superstar’s sold-out stadium tour, debuted in the Top 10 with 7.8 million views.
