What Happens in Virgin River Season 4?

So many near-death experiences for one small town.

This article contains major character or plot details.

It’s hard to believe that all the drama in four seasons of Virgin River has transpired in about one year’s time. But that’s Virgin River time for ya — things work differently in that idyllic-seeming Northern California town. Where else could a big-city nurse practitioner like Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) fall in love with gruff Marine veteran-turned-bar-owner Jack (Martin Henderson) while things like drug smuggling, murder, and kidnapping happen all around them?

But that’s exactly what happens in this lovably exciting show, which follows the residents of the titular town and their über-dramatic adventures. There’s Mel, Jack, chef Preacher (Colin Lawrence), doctor Doc (Tim Matheson), mayor Hope (Annette O’Toole), lawyer Brie (Zibby Allen), Marine vet and ne’er-do-well Brady (Benjamin Hollingsworth), cop Mike (Marco Grazzini), baker Paige (Lexa Doig) and son Christopher (Chase Petriw), hairdresser Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), busboy Ricky (Grayson Gurnsey), troubled teen Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale), and so many more

Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe and Mark Ghanimé as Dr. Cameron Hayek smile at each other on a porch in Season 4 of ‘Virgin River.’

Who’s the new doctor at Doc’s practice?

After Doc discovers he has a disease affecting his vision, he hires a new doctor he hopes will someday be able to take over his practice: Dr. Cameron Hayek (Mark Ghanimé), who harbors a bit of a crush on Mel.

Is Brady alive?

Brady was the main suspect in Jack’s shooting. (Remember our favorite barman was left bleeding out in his own restaurant at the end of Season 2.) And while Brady was arrested for the crime, Preacher shows Jack surveillance footage of the fateful night he was shot that proves Brady didn’t do it. But Brady’s already in jail for the crime, and at the end of the season premiere a fellow inmate stabs him and leaves him for dead. Luckily, he comes through alive — but the head of the local drug business, Calvin (David Cubitt), wants him to continue to help smuggle drugs. Brady agrees, but only if Calvin stays away from Brie, who’s now his girlfriend. Brie is naturally protective of Brady, too, and hatches a plan with Mike to take down Calvin once and for all. But she has to deal with her own issues when her former co-worker — the one who had sexually assaulted her — comes to Virgin River looking for her assistance in another work-related sexual harassment incident.

Who shot Jack?

Well if Brady didn’t do it, who did? In the finale, we learn it was Vince (Steve Bacic), the twin brother of Paige’s abusive ex.

Does Paige come back?

Yes! Virgin River’s resident baker left town a few seasons ago after she accidentally killed her ex-husband, Wes (also Bacic), who threatened her and their son. (And Preacher helped her hide his body.) When she returns this season, she shows up on Preacher’s doorstep in a panic, interrupting his date (awkward!), because Vince kidnapped Christopher in an attempt to find out what happened to Wes. Preacher rescues his onetime ward, Christopher, and has an epic showdown with Vince.

Kai Bradbury as Denny smiles wearing a gray flannel shirt in Season 4 of ‘Virgin River.’

Who’s Denny?

Season 3 ended with a mysterious young man knocking on Doc’s door, looking for his grandfather. But since Doc doesn’t have kids, can we trust that this new kid is telling the truth? It turns out that yes, we can. Denny (Kai Bradbury) is Doc’s grandson — the son of a child Doc didn’t even know he had (and never will know, as he recently passed). Mel discovers Denny riffling through the clinic’s medical cabinet for pills, but it’s not for a nefarious reason — Denny has discovered he’s inherited Huntington’s disease, a rare and deadly disorder.

Denny also becomes a point in Virgin River’s newest love triangle, throwing a wrench in Lizzie and Ricky’s relationship. However, it’s not much of a triangle because Lizzie tells Ricky she won’t ever give him a second chance, and Ricky ends up leaving town to join the Marines.

Why does Jack disappear?

Plagued by paternity questions, his own parents’ divorce, and that tricky postwar PTSD, Jack has leaned on drinking to cope more than ever. In a panic one day, he takes off in his truck and disappears, leading to a townwide search. But instead of continuing his reign as the poster boy of “men would rather do [X] instead of go to therapy,” Jack apologizes for raising the alarm and actually seeks some professional help this time around.

Is Calvin dead?

Brady and Mike team up to take down Calvin, but they get sidelined on their quest when they’re spying on him and the boat he’s standing on explodes. It sure looks like the end of the road for him!

Who’s the new drug kingpin?

It turns out that Calvin was never the head of the pack in the illicit drug business — it’s actually a much less conspicuous person: Melissa (Barbara Pollard), the sister of Jack’s new business partner in the airstream “glamping” business he intends to open.

Tosca Baggoo as Dr. Freeman, Tim Matheson as Doc Mullins, and Annette O'Toole as Hope gather in a doctor’s office in Season 4 of ‘Virgin River.’

How’s Hope’s health?

Virgin River’s mayor was absent for much of Season 3, visiting a friend in South Carolina. But when she was on her way home, she got into a major car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury. Thus at the beginning of the season, Hope doesn’t even remember she was headed home for her friend Lilly’s funeral. That means the news is broken to her twice, and she’s dealing with her grief as she relearns how to live her life with a TBI. “Hope is always going to have the residual effects of her injury, and it might pop out at certain times,” O’Toole told Tudum in 2022. “I don’t know what’s going to be in store, but I’m excited for her to get back to her work as mayor [in Season 5].”

Is Jack the father of Mel’s baby?

Previously, Mel had gone back to Los Angeles in a last-ditch effort to conceive with her late husband via IVF. When she learned she was pregnant, she’d reconciled with Jack and wasn’t sure if he or her husband was the father. When her ex-mother-in-law tries to get custody of the couple’s last embryos, she needs Jack to take a paternity test to find out whether the potential grandmother would have any rights to see Mel’s child. Thankfully, a paternity test comes back with good news for the happy parents-to-be: Jack’s going to be a dad.

Martin Henderson as Jack Sheridan puts a ring on Alexandra Breckenridge as Mel Monroe’s finger in Season 4 of ‘Virgin River.’

Are Mel and Jack getting married?

Yes, they sure are! Our favorite couple ends the season (finally) engaged.

Who’s the father of Charmaine’s twins?

In the final scene of the season, a very pregnant Charmaine is in distress. When Mel and Jack rush to her aid, she tells them she thinks she’s ill because she’s being punished. Punished for what, you (and they) ask? Oh, just for lying about Jack being the father of her twins. That’s right — Jack, you are NOT the father. But who is?!
