Where Did ‘You’ Season 4 Film? Follow Joe Around England

Hampsie isn’t real. But Knebworth House is.

    March 10, 2023

You is a show about the fantasy of reinvention, about the belief that the key to unlocking your perfect, idealized self is just around the corner — the next new love interest, the next change of scenery. In Season 4, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) crosses the pond to begin a new life as Jonathan Moore, an American literature professor teaching in London. It’s another fresh start after the first three seasons saw him moving from New York to Los Angeles to the fictional San Francisco suburb Madre Linda –– where he literally burned his old life to the ground. Booklover Joe is now molding young minds at Darcy College while simultaneously ingratiating himself into a group of well-to-do friends in London high society.

There’s art dealer Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), socialite Lady Phoebe (Tilly Keeper), fellow American expat Adam (Lukas Gage), artist Simon (Aidan Cheng), influencer Sophie (Niccy Lin), spoiled rich girl Gemma (Eve Austin) and up-and-coming politician Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers). But when they start turning up dead at the hands of the Eat-the-Rich serial killer, Joe once again becomes wrapped up in murder.

With every season of You, each new locale offers Joe a chance to rewrite the script for his life. So, who is he this time? Take a look at where he and his friends hang out in London and the English countryside with this guide to the filming locations of You Season 4.

Knebworth House

Hampsie House

In Episodes 4 and 5, Joe and his pals head to the country for a weekend getaway at Lady Phoebe’s family estate, Hampsbridge House (“Hampsie” if you’re in the know). In real life, the Hertfordshire Tudor mansion Knebworth House stands in for Hampsie.

“Knebworth, where we went, is very filming-friendly,” showrunner Sera Gamble tells Tudum. “You may have seen it in other shows or films. It had everything we needed — we were so lucky. And not only that, we wrote it as a country house. I imagined something that was obviously owned by someone of means, but I didn’t expect it to look like a fucking castle, necessarily!”

Both the exteriors and interiors were used on screen — yes, even Phoebe’s sex dungeon. “The sets that we built inside the house are extra delicious because it’s not just her sex boudoir — it’s her sex boudoir and the windows behind it are truly of this old estate house,” Gamble says.

Royal Holloway, University of London

Darcy College

While Darcy College is a fictional place, its idyllic university setting is very much real. The quad, the literature department — nearly every Darcy College location, really — is actually the Surrey campus of Royal Holloway, about 20 miles west of London.

Lincoln’s Inn

Darcy College Library

The Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn stands in for the Darcy College library, as seen in this scene between Joe/Jonathan and his whip-smart student Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman). In case you’re wondering, the society is a 600-year-old “unincorporated association of students, barristers and judges … dedicated to the qualification, training and development of our members at all stages of their legal careers, in a collegiate and inclusive environment,” according to its website.

Four Seasons Hotel

Phoebe’s flat

A mega rich, titled heiress is only going to accept the very best — which is why it makes sense that the Four Seasons Hotel at 10 Trinity Square is where the interior and exterior of Phoebe’s flat were filmed.

Cornwall Gardens, Kensington

Exterior of Kate’s flat

While the interior of Kate’s flat was built on a soundstage, the exterior was filmed in the rich Kensington borough of London.

Black Park Country Park

Hampsie Woods

This Slough country park is a frequent filming location. While most of the Hampsie scenes were filmed at Knebworth House, the woods where the gang goes hunting — and where Joe is hunted — were actually in Black Park.

St. Pancras International

St. Pancras International

As Joe chases Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) from Paris to London, he spies on her at St. Pancras railway station. Wondering how St. Pancras looked so real on screen? Because it was the actual St. Pancras station, where you can catch the Eurostar to France.

  🤐 SPOILER ALERT 🤐

Charlotte Ritchie and Greg Kinnear speak in an airplace hangar as Kate and Tom

White Waltham Airfield

Tom’s airplane hangar

As Kate complains to Joe, every wealthy man-child inevitably ends up obsessed with flying. Naturally, her billionaire father Tom Lockwood (Greg Kinnear) whiles away his time in an airplane hangar outside of London. You filmed these scenes in White Waltham Airfield in Maidenhead, which is about an hour’s drive from The Big Smoke.

Penn Badgley and Ed Speleers hug on a footbridge as Rhys and Joe

Royal Victoria Dock

London footbridge

Joe and Rhys’ final scene together is one of Ed Speleers’ favorites in all of You. Joe walks to a footbridge somewhere in London with a plan: he needs to push “Rhys,” who represents his dark side, off the bridge and then jump himself. The pair share an emotional embrace before both ending up in the water.

“What was important for us to get right was, and leading up to that hug, was to get Rhys’ point of view across that he wasn’t all malevolent. He wasn’t trying to bring out the darkness in Joe,” Speleers tells Tudum of shooting the momentous moment. “If anything, he was trying to make him commit these acts so that Joe could be the best he could possibly be.”

The harrowing scene was filmed at the Royal Victoria Dock near the University of East London.
