Investigative journalist Ema Garay (Soledad Villamil) has built a successful career at the magazine Lado Bariloche by catching criminals who evade the justice system, but her latest story hits closer to home. As she develops a personal relationship with Leo Mercer (Alberto Ammann), a social worker who helps with her investigation into the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl, Ema gets a tip that makes him the primary suspect. The entire justice system is gunning for Leo, but Ema might be the only person who believes he’s innocent. Her pursuit of the truth unravels a web of interconnected mysteries and suspects that puts her life in danger. This thriller, set in Bariloche, Argentina, is the first Latin American adaptation of Coben’s work.

Fool Me Once

The Harlan Coben formula is intact with Fool Me Once but has the addition of fabulous coats, thanks to Michelle Keegan’s wardrobe (and social media’s obsession with it). Keegan plays Maya Stern, a former military pilot whose sister and husband were both killed in the past year. She’s suffering from PTSD from these deaths as well as a traumatic incident from her time in service. Things escalate when she sees her late husband, Joe (Richard Armitage, playing his third Coben character), talking to their baby on nanny cam footage. When she tries to investigate if her husband could still be alive, she runs into dead ends at every corner — but she won’t let the police, Joe’s wealthy family, or even her own grief stop her.

Gone for Good

One of Coben’s earlier novels, Gone for Good has all the trademarks readers and viewers of his work have come to expect: tragedy, time jumps, disappearances, and mysteries. In the French language series, Guillaume Lucchesi (Finnegan Oldfield) spends a summer at his family’s estate on the French Riviera in June 2010 when he witnesses the murder of his girlfriend (who’s also his next-door neighbor) and his older brother. Ten years later, on the eve of his mother’s funeral, Guillaume proposes to his now-girlfriend Judith (Nailia Harzoune). She says, “I’m already yours” — which isn’t exactly a “yes” — and then disappears the next day. Guillaume is dropped into a mystery about her past when he tries to figure out where she went. This series only spans five episodes, so he’ll have to figure it out quickly.

Hold Tight

Although not a true sequel, Hold Tight is set in the same world and timeline as The Woods, so there are returning characters. Paweł Kopiński (Grzegorz Damięcki) and his now-wife, Laura (Agnieszka Grochowska), are back but not quite as involved in the central storyline. They’re connected via Paweł’s daughter, Kaja (Agata Labno), whose boyfriend, Adam Barczyk (Krzysztof Oleksyn), goes missing after their friend Igor dies. (It’s like history repeating itself in this Warsaw community!) Adam’s mother, Anna (Magdalena Boczarska), will go to great lengths to find her son.

The Innocent

Coben’s novels have been translated into more than 40 languages and are popular worldwide, so it’s not surprising that many of his adaptations have been filmed internationally, including The Innocent. This Spanish mystery stars Mario Casas as Mateo Vidal, a law school student who gets pulled into a fight at a club that leads to a man’s death. After serving four years in prison, Mateo finishes his law degree and meets Olivia Costa (Alexandra Jiménez), whom he ultimately marries. Although Mateo is trying to move on with his life, he keeps experiencing setbacks and tragedies. Aura Garrido also stars in The Innocent as Detective Lorena Ortiz, whose own tragedies may find her connected to a new case involving Mateo.

The Woods

Split between two time periods, The Woods is a six-part Polish series. The first time period is August 1994 at a summer camp (in the woods, naturally) where Paweł Kopiński (Hubert Miłkowski) is a chaperone and his younger sister, Kamila (Martyna Byczkowska), is a camper. The second timeline is September 2019, when we learn that Paweł (now played by Grzegorz Damięcki) has become a prosecutor in Warsaw, is a recently widowed single father, and has reconnected with his camp sweetheart, Laura (Agnieszka Grochowska). When a body is discovered surrounded by newspaper clippings all about Paweł, he’s called in to identify the deceased. It’s then that we learn that at that 1994 summer camp, two people were murdered and two went missing — one being Kamila. As Paweł investigates the case and digs deeper, he discovers his sister may still be out there. Just when you think you’ve figured out what’s going on in The Woods, it changes course and keeps you guessing.
