In 2022, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series will once again take new form: We’ll see Elsie Fisher and an entirely new cast fight for their lives in a sequel that contains all the gore and horror fans have come to know from this franchise. The latest entry will be a direct sequel to the 1974 original in which Leatherface actually gets away with the heinous acts that transpired. While fans are expecting the usual amount of carnage from new producer Fede Alvarez, the latest foray chronicles the rampage of the infamous Leatherface with several spooky surprises along the way. Watch out for spoilers ahead as we recount the most shocking moments from the new film.

One of the biggest reveals sure to shock viewers is the reemergence of Leatherface. In a direct sequel to the original TCM, the last time we saw our killer, he was in the middle of a road swinging his chainsaw around. Now, 40 years later, we find out that Leatherface has been living a quiet life. In 2022, he’s living in an all but abandoned orphanage run by the eccentric Mrs. Mc in the ghost town of Harlow, Texas. But when tragedy survivor Lila (Elsie Fisher) and her influencer friends arrive in town looking to turn it into a social media paradise, they inevitably awaken the beast.

Another character making their shocking return is Sally Hardesty, the lone survivor of the original massacre. No series entry before this one has ever touched on what happened to Hardesty, and Leatherface has been the only character to consistently return to the screen — until now. In 2022, we discover that Hardesty is seeking revenge on Leatherface for murdering her brother. She travels to Harlow when she hears reports of the killer’s reemergence in the small Texas town. Equipped with numerous firearms, our scored heroine faces Leatherface in a final showdown where she unfortunately meets her demise, fully closing the book on the original film.

In the middle of all the violence, the gaggle of social media influencers who landed in Harlow barricade themselves on a party bus. When Leatherface enters the town square, he confronts everyone on the bus.. The influencers initially believe Leatherface is an act …until he starts killing them off one by one, with all the cameras catching the violence and making for one of the bloodiest scenes in recent horror memory.

After an altercation over property ownership — and a Confederate flag that hangs from the building — Mrs. Mc suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital. When she suddenly dies en route, Leatherface, who’s along for the ride but not “in character,” awakens and wreaks bloody havoc. Leatherface is next seen desecrating the corpse of Mrs. Mc to fashion a new dead skin mask. Chilling.

Lila and her sister Melody (Sarah Yarkin) are able to fight off Leatherface. Lila, overcoming her fear of firearms, shoots him with a shotgun, and Melody uses Leatherface’s own chainsaw against him. Thinking him to be dead, the girls get into a self-driving car programmed to leave Harlow. But in a final jumpscare, Leatherface surprises them by revealing he’s survived and yanks Melody from the car, brutally beheading her. Lila screams as the car drives itself away, leaving her sister’s body behind as Leatherface holds up her head as his latest trophy.

After the credits, we see a lonesome Leatherface return to his childhood home, back to where it all began. It’s a subversion of the 1974 film, which features a last-minute escape. By killing Melody in the final moments of the film, there’s now proof that no one is truly safe from the slasher legend. Except, perhaps, our lone survivor: Lila.
