Since 1988, SummerSlam has been one of WWE’s biggest annual spectacles. The rich history of unforgettable SummerSlam moments goes on and on, from the remarkable display of technical wrestling between Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect in 1991, to Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon’s iconic ladder match in1995, to Brock Lesnar and The Rock’s battle in 2001.
Along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and Survivor Series, SummerSlam is one of WWE’s big four premium live events, and this year it gets even larger, shifting into a two-night event for the first time ever. There’ll be plenty of championship gold on the line as well as matchups that’ve been months in the making, some of which are ripple effects from WrestleMania 41 and prior.
In what will be the final SummerSlam for WWE legend John Cena, he’ll have a highly-anticipated WrestleMania rematch against Cody Rhodes, this time in a Street Fight. Cena defeated Rhodes at Mania back in April, vowing to “ruin wrestling” and eventually retire with the belt, making him the “Last Real Champion.” Rhodes has clawed his way back into the title picture by knocking off Randy Orton to win the 2025 King of the Ring Tournament at WWE Night of Champions.
Now, Rhodes has a chance at redemption, and perhaps the weight of wrestling on his shoulders, as he tries to conquer Cena.
Then there’s CM Punk, who recently overcame a dominant Bron Breakker in a Number 1 Contender Gauntlet Match to earn a shot at Gunther and the World Heavyweight Championship.
Meanwhile, Tiffany Stratton, who has successfully defended her WWE Women’s Championship against Trish Stratus, Nia Jax, and Charlotte Flair in recent months, is set to face Queen of the Ring winner Jade Cargill, who will look to bring Tiffy Time to a screeching halt and begin a title reign of her own.
Plus, Naomi, who cashed in her Money in the Bank briefcase during IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley’s WWE Women’s World Championship match at Evolution to win the title, and at SummerSlam she’ll defend her freshly won belt against SKY and Ripley in a Triple Threat Match.
