You’d be hard-pressed to find a more direct title than I Suck at Girls, the just-announced series based on the autobiography of the same name by Emmy-nominated showrunner Justin Halpern (Abbott Elementary, Harley Quinn, Surviving Jack). The New York Times bestselling author shares showrunner, writer, and executive producer duties with Patrick Schumacker (Abbott Elementary, Harley Quinn, Surviving Jack) for Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions.
Centered around three awkward 10th-graders stumbling through the ups and downs of teenage romance and identity, the series will star Kayo Martin (The Plague) as Steven, Jeremy Ray Taylor (It, Big Sky) as Garrett, and Laila Pruitt (BMF, Will Trent) as Anna.
“I’m incredibly excited to make a show that can hopefully capture the funny, emotional, and oftentimes humiliating experience of growing up, as opposed to just the emotional and humiliating experience of my life as an adult,” Halpern says.
Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Rooster, Ted Lasso), Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer for Doozer Productions are also executive producers, along with Chet Dave for Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions.
Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s US vice president of comedy series, is excited to collaborate with the creative team of “hilariously relatable” I Suck at Girls. “They have a rare ability to turn deeply personal, unconventional ideas into culture-defining series that are sharp, funny, and deeply human,” Pakosta says. “This show captures universal truths about life and relationships with authentic heart and humor. We believe it’s a story audiences will genuinely love and connect with.”
