Kate Hudson gets back in the game in Season 2 of Running Point, now streaming on Netflix. Get a taste of the new season with the trailer and first look photos.

Season 1 of Running Point was a slam dunk when it debuted, so it was no surprise when the basketball comedy was swiftly renewed for a second. And now, the LA Waves will play another season: Running Point has been renewed for Season 3.

Mindy Kaling’s series charts basketball heiress Isla Gordon’s (Hudson) unexpected ascent from reformed party girl to LA Waves president: When her eldest brother Cam (Justin Theroux) goes to rehab, he names his often-overlooked sister as his replacement.

Season 2 opens with a bang: Cam comes back from rehab early. He insists he doesn’t want to take back his old job, but over the course of the season, he reveals himself to be just one of several people trying to sabotage Isla. Season 2 delivers the same warmth and wit as its predecessor and adds some hilarious actors to the roster. Keep reading to meet the new cast members, get a refresher on Season 1, and debrief that shocking twist in the Season 2 finale.

What happens in Season 2 of Running Point?

With Cam now back in the mix and a new basketball season in full swing, the Gordons have their hands full. During Season 2, the LA Waves adjust to a new coach, momentarily lose a key member of the team to a Canadian rival, tackle locker room drama when two players fight over a girl, improve the LA Waves City Dancers’ contracts, and face off against former colleague Jay Brown’s (Jay Ellis) Boston team in their most important game yet. What happened in Running Point Season 1?

Season 1 follows Isla after she’s unexpectedly appointed president of her family business, the Los Angeles Waves basketball team. With best friend and chief of staff Ali (Brenda Song) by her side, Isla navigates the antics of the male-dominated basketball world with little help from her chaotic brothers (played by Theroux, Scott MacArthur, Drew Tarver, and Fabrizio Guido) or unruly players, including live-wire rapper Travis Bugg (Chet Hanks) and accomplished star player Marcus Winfield (Toby Sandeman). Despite their best efforts, in the season finale, the LA Waves lose the championship game, and Isla finds herself in a confusing love triangle between the team’s coach, Jay, and her fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield).

Which Season 1 cast members return for Season 2?

Here are the actors reprising their roles:

  • Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon
  • Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon
  • Scott MacArthur as Ness Gordon
  • Brenda Song as Ali Lee
  • Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Gordon
  • Chet Hanks as Travis Bugg
  • Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield
  • Max Greenfield as Lev Levenson
  • Jay Ellis as Jay Brown
  • Roberto Sanchez as Stephen Ramirez
  • Jon Glaser as Sean Murphy
  • Scott Evans as Charlie
  • Rob Huebel as Clint Binelli
  • Marissa Reyes as Sofia
  • Justin Hurtt-Dunkley as Victor

There are also a few recurring cast members stepping off the bench to become regulars in Season 2:

  • Ken Marino (The Residence, The Other Two) plays Al Fleischman, the self-appointed “toilet king of Orange County,” who wants better courtside seats to the LA Waves.
  • Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Irishman, No Good Deed) plays Coach Norm, an old LA Waves coach who comes back into the picture after Jay leaves for Boston.
  • Tommy Dewey (Casual, Saturday Night) plays Magnus, the general manager of the Toronto Trappers.
  • Richa Moorjani (Never Have I Ever, Fargo) plays Aruna, the LA Waves’ incredibly blunt star accountant who can finagle her way around any number of financial hurdles.
  • Jake Picking (Top Gun: Maverick, Hollywood) plays Tommy White, the LA Waves’ new pretty-boy star point guard.
  • Blake Anderson (Workaholics, Game Over, Man!) plays Leroy, Cam’s wild sober companion.
  • Duby Maduegbunam (Caught Up, Sistas) plays Benson, the newest basketball player on the LA Waves.
  • Aliyah Turner (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) plays Zoé Debay, a beautiful and confident former child star who’s now on the verge of becoming an A-list actor.

Who was involved in Running Point Season 2?

Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever), Ike Barinholtz (The Studio, The Mindy Project), and David Stassen (The Mindy Project) return to showrun, write, and executive produce Season 2. Los Angeles Lakers governor and minority owner Jeanie Buss, from whom the series took inspiration, and Lakers’ manager of special projects Linda Rambis also continue to executive produce Season 2, alongside Howard Klein (The Office) and Michael Weaver (Little Fires Everywhere), who also directs.

“We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a Season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show,” Kaling told Tudum when the renewal was first announced. “We still cannot believe the response from audiences — thank you to everyone who has watched! Thank you to our partners at Netflix, Warner Brothers, our star who brought this show to life, Kate Hudson, and, of course, executive producers Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis, without whom there would be no Running Point.”
