Watch the First Circle Scene (Cough, Cough) From ‘That ’90s Show’

Coming to you from the Forman basement, it’s the Donkey Kong conspiracy.

    Jan. 17, 2023

Have you heard of the Donkey Kong conspiracy? It’s one of life’s greatest mysteries, really. And it has all the kids on That ’90s Show wondering: Why is Donkey Kong a gorilla and not a donkey?

“It’s a lie. They based their entire empire on a lie,” muses Wisconsin teen Nikki (Sam Morelos) in a special scene from the series premiere of That ’90s Show

The earth-shattering question comes in the very first “circle” of the spin-off sitcom, which sees Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna’s (Laura Prepon) teenage daughter Leia (Callie Haverda) spend the summer with her grandparents Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) in Point Place, Wisconsin in the mid-’90s.

A circle, as fans of That ’70s Show will remember, is the particular way the camera tosses from character to character as the teens partake in the devil’s lettuce in the Forman family basement.

“Those are probably the most difficult scenes to film, but they were also the most fun,” star Haverda tells Tudum of the giggle-fests that are those stoner circle scenes. Co-star Ashley Aufderheide (who plays Gwen) agrees, explaining to Tudum, “the camera just whips around a bunch of times and you’re like, ‘Oh my goodness, the camera’s on me!’ and then when all the other characters are talking to the camera and you’re not on screen, you can sneak in a little laugh.”

This first circle sees the group contemplate the fleeting nature of love, put forth the aforementioned Donkey Kong conspiracy and discover some dope flannels from Red’s collection, and you can watch it above.

“[Leia is] definitely tuning into a new side of herself” while getting baked in that first circle, says Haverda. The supersmart, kind of awkward teen will spend the summer coming out of her shell. Here, “it’s her first time being super adventurous and trying something crazy she’s never done before.” But there will be many more of those moments before the season is through.

That ’90s Show premieres Jan. 19 on Netflix.
